For the past three years, I have had the opportunity of being pastor of St. Anne's Church. This is a large and ethnically diverse community of approximately 3,000 families, who come together to worship God and reach out to the wider community.

History of Catholic Churches in Brampton

First Mass in the Brampton Area, 1615

The first Mass in the Brampton Area was said by Father Joseph Le Caron at the Attiwandaron Indian Village of Carhagouha circa 1615. The village was near the Credit River which was a main fur trading route and is believed to have been ner the current site of Brampton. The Attiwandaron tribe and all its villages were wiped out by the Iroquios about 1650 when the Iroquios started getting fire arms from the Dutch and English and no longer needed flint for spear and arrow heads which they had obtained from the Attiwandaron chert beds as Point Abino.

Before 1674 Brampton was under The Church of France. (served by missionaries)

1674-1820
Brampton was under The Quebec Diocese.

1820-1842
Brampton was under The Kingston Diocese.

1822-1833
Brampton was considered part of St.Paul's Parish. ( 83 Power Street, Toronto.)

1833-1864
Brampton was considered part of St. Patrick's Wildfield.

Guardian Angels' Church
Guardian Angels' Church was built in 1865 on Centre St.S. beside the current Catholic graveyard. The church was completely destroyed by fire in July 1878. Mass was celebrated in several locations until an unused Presbyterian Church on John St. was purchased and named Guardian Angels' Church. In 1909 the Church was rebuilt and the name of the church was changed to St.Mary's. In 1918 Brampton and Streetsville were united as a parish. St. Mary's was the parish seat with St.Joseph's in Streetsville as the Mission Church. In 1963-1964 the present Church located on Main St. S. was built.
